Why Maryville Little League Implements the "Play Up" Policy During the Fall Season
Understanding the "Play Up" Policy
At Maryville Little League (MLL), our fall season serves as a preparatory period for the upcoming spring season. To best prepare our players, we assign them to the league they will be eligible for in Spring of next year during the current Fall season. This policy helps players acclimate to the new rules, competition levels, and playing environments they will encounter in the spring.
Addressing Concerns
We understand that some parents may worry their child is too young or inexperienced to "play up." For instance, a 6-year-old who turns 7 in August 2025 will play in the Coach Pitch (7-8 year old) league during the Fall 2024 season. Here’s why this approach benefits our young athletes:
- Acclimatization and Preparation: The fall season, with fewer players and a slower pace, provides a learning-oriented environment. This setting allows young athletes to gradually adapt to the faster pace and increased competition they will face in the spring.
- Long-term Development: Playing up challenges players to develop their skills and rise to meet higher levels of competition. This early exposure helps improve their technical abilities and game understanding, ultimately leading to better overall development and enjoyment of the sport.
- Previous Experience: Last year, we experimented with allowing players to "play down." However, we found that this did not achieve the desired developmental goals. Returning to our long-standing policy of playing up ensures that players are better prepared for the spring season and continue to develop appropriately.
The Benefits of Playing Up
Playing up offers numerous advantages that extend beyond the field:
- Improved Skills: Exposure to more skilled and older players encourages younger athletes to improve their technical and tactical abilities.
- Increased Confidence: Successfully competing with older players can boost a young athlete's confidence, making them more resilient and adaptable.
- Enhanced Social Skills: Interacting with older peers helps younger players develop important social skills, such as teamwork and leadership.
Conclusion
We believe the play-up policy is in the best interest of our young athletes. It prepares them for future challenges, fosters their development, and ensures they enjoy their Little League experience to the fullest. We appreciate your understanding and support in this endeavor.
